ABOUT US
About the Monroe County Library System

The Monroe County Library System (MCLS) is an association of independent public libraries working together to improve library services for residents of Monroe County. The MCLS was chartered by the New York State Board of Regents in 1954 and is directed by a board of trustees appointed by the Monroe County Legislature.  MCLS members include the libraries of sixteen towns, two villages, a school district and the City of Rochester. Each member library is governed by an independent board of trustees and funded by local taxes.

The Rundel Memorial Building and the Bausch and Lomb Public Library Building, at 115 South Avenue in downtown Rochester, serve as the Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County and the operational hub of the MCLS. The MCLS is funded by New York State, member libraries and Monroe County; MCLS services are provided under a contract with the Rochester Public Library.

Services provided under the MCLS include a comprehensive telecommunications network, library asset management system (catalog), shipping and delivery services, outreach services, interlibrary loan services, administrative and technical support to member libraries, and the coordinated purchases of electronic resources.

Our Mission:

The MCLS ensures its members can thrive and make the best use of tax dollars by providing centralized technologies, shared resources, and promotion of best practices.

Our Vision:

The MCLS is a substantial contributor to the enriched quality of life of the community of Monroe. It enables countywide delivery of customer focused services and is known for innovative thinking, leadership information technology and cooperation among its members.
