Public libraries in Monroe County provide easy and, in most cases, free access to hundreds of computers for community residents. You can search the Internet, type an essay, create a resume, file your taxes, create posters for your next garage sale, and much more using the equipment available in our libraries. Many Monroe County libraries also offer free classes on using a computer. The current offerings are shown below.

Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County 

The Central Library offers a Basic Computer Use, Basic Internet/Computer Skills and  Basic Microsoft Word 2007 classes.  All classes meet in the Computer Training Lab on the first floor of the Bausch and Lomb Public Library Building at the Central Library. Due to space limitations, pre-registration is required. Students may register by calling the Information Center at 428-8020 or by visiting the Information Center Reference Desk. The following 1.5 hour classes are held on a regular basis:

• Basic Computer Use - This beginner’s class introduces what a computer is and how it works. Learn the basics of computer hardware and popular software. You’ll also begin to practice using a mouse to open computer programs and play games. Currently offered every Tuesday.
• Basic Internet and Computer Skills - Seldom or never used a mouse before? Then this is the class for you! We’ll introduce you to Windows and the computer desktop before connecting to the World Wide Web - the Eighth Wonder of the World! You’ll learn how to navigate the Internet, scroll, and find information you need using a search engine. Currently offered every other Sunday.
• Basic Microsoft Word 2007 - Need to type up a resume, letter or report?  This class will help you do that by introducing the basics of using Microsoft's newest word processor for the PC. Basic typing, editing and formatting in Word 2007 will be covered.  Currently offered every other Thursday.

Brighton Memorial Library Computer Classes

• Mouse Maneuvers - Learn to maneuver the mouse and try keyboard shortcuts for an enjoyable experience online.
• Internet Basics - Explore selected web sites on the World Wide Web using Internet Explorer. Learn how to use browser commands and locate web sites. Participants must have experience using the mouse, or have taken Mouse Maneuvers.
• E-mail Basics - Open a free Yahoo e-mail account. Practice e-mail commands using your account. Participants must have surfed the World Wide Web and be proficient with the mouse, or have taken Internet Basics.
• E-mail Advanced - Use the features of Yahoo e-mail to organize and enhance your messages. Create an address list and e-mail folders. Learn to send and open attachments. Participants must have surfed the World Wide Web and have a free e-mail account, or have taken E-mail Basics.
  These classes are offered on a regular basis and there is no limit. Each class is a one-hour, hands-on training session, taught by Brighton Memorial Library reference librarians. Brighton also offers three-part Microsoft Word and three-part Excel classes in the Spring and Fall. Brockport-Seymour Library
The Seymour Library in Brockport offers “computer buddies," experienced computer users who provide one-on-one assistance for new computer users. Contact the Seymour Library at 637-1050 for further information.

Chili Public Library
The Chili Public Library offers a beginning Internet class and a class on email. Internet is offered once a month and email once a month for one hour. Fairport Public Library
The Fairport Library offers basic Internet classes, which consist of a two-part course covering basic mouse skills and more advanced internet searching skills. Due to limited space, classes are offered about twice a month, except for the summer months. Contact the Fairport Library at 223-9091 for further information.

Gates Public Library
The Gates Library has classes at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, and a class on Yahoo e-mail. Registration is limited to four, and residents of towns other than Gates must pay $7.00 to take the classes. Gates also hosts a monthly Senior Special Interest Group (S.I.G.), which is free to all Monroe County residents. Call the Gates Library at 247-6446 for further information.

• Mousing Around - No computer experience is required. Students learn to use the mouse and practice Internet navigation techniques.
• Intermediate Internet - Students must have prior computer experience or they must have taken Mousing Around. Students practice three different methods for locating websites and information on popular subjects. First, students use a web directory to locate health information; then they use Yahoo travel to simulate planning a trip; and lastly they search for genealogy websites on Google.
• Advanced Internet Searching - Experienced computer and Internet users learn the theory behind keyword searching and practice creating search statements; then they learn to use quotation mark and minus sign search operators to obtain different results; and lastly they use an online tutorial to learn about a set of criteria they can use to evaluate the information found on websites.
• Yahoo E-Mail - Students are walked through the process of setting up a Yahoo e-mail account and learn to send and receive messages.

Greece Public Library
The Greece Public Library offers a catalog class and an Introduction to the Internet class. A half hour prior to the classes, there is a mouse training session using the online tutorial Mousercize. Hamlin: The Hamlin Library does not currently offer computer instruction. Contact the Greece Library at 225-8951 for further information.

Henrietta Public Library
The Henrietta Public Library offers Internet and online catalog instruction by request only, in addition to seasonal classes on using E-Bay. Contact the Henrietta Library at 359-7092 for further information.

Penfield Public Library
The Penfield Library offers four to five classes per month on a variety of topics, including:

• Library catalog instruction
• Beginning Computing (intro to its parts and using a mouse – very basic)
• Beginner’s internet
• Google (basic, advanced)
• MS Office (including separate Word, Excel, and PowerPoint classes)
• Database classes (business, student, medical, local history, Ancestry)
• iPods and iTunes
• E-Mail
