Library:  Central Library - Lower Link Gallery

Exhibit Dates:  2017-06-01 - 2017-09-14

Details:  Paintings by John Bennett: “More Explorations: the Interaction of Art & Music” Lower Link Gallery at the Central Library of Rochester & Monroe County, thru August 2017. John Bennett is a local artist whose work is influenced by music. His detailed works demonstrate the mapping of musical patterns to canvas and are created using Crepe Tapes, and colorful oil paint. Viewers will find two distinct types of panels in this exhibit – both rely on musical precedents. The subjects of the eighteen panels in the O & S and T & B sets are artist designed – they undergo variation, interaction, and comparison operations. The underlying philosophy is that one can truly know subjects only by experiencing them in a variety of situations. Panel and set organization employs features found in Bruckner Eighth and Tchaikovsky Fifth symphonies. The subjects of the thirteen stand-alone panels are mapped from specific musical scores – they include fugue subjects, folk song lines, and various other passages. Supporting patterns are artist designed to adapt the linear mappings for planar display.
